PROBLEM STATEMENT

Imagining a mobile app that is already being used for restaurant reservations & ordering food and designing a feature for this app that allows users to easily split bills proportionally with friends after dining out.

KEY OBJECTIVES

  • User Experience - Focus on creating an intuitive and engaging user interface that simplifies the bill splitting process

  • Visual Interface - Coming up with a comprehensive & visually appealing output

  • Achieving outcome in Limited time - Researching and finding solutions within a deadline of 5 days

Planning and Design Process

The task resonated with me on a personal level as I often find myself in the position of handling payments and navigating the challenge of splitting bills among friends. With a 5-day deadline, I conducted secondary research on existing bill splitting apps, analysing their features and user feedback to understand the concept quickly. I then followed a process of Discovery, Brainstorming, and Implementation to design a detailed digital product.

DAY 01 & 02

Problem Discovery

Research and understanding of the domain, competitor analysis

DAY 03

Brainstorming

Creating User flow, Sketching ideas, curating solutions, wireframing

DAY 04 & 05

Implementation

Establishing a visual language, Hi-fi designs, and prototyping

Before starting the process, calling out Assumptions

As there was no specification for the region in the brief given, I limited and focused my research towards the Indian users (INR Currency), especially tech-savvy demographics, for creating the MVP.

SECONDARY RESEARCH

I dedicated around 2 days to conducting thorough secondary market research on bill splitting apps worldwide. I delved into the topic by watching informative YouTube videos and reading insightful blogs. This deep dive into the subject provided me with valuable insights.

I gained clarity on the best practices, user preferences, and innovative solutions in this domain, empowering me to make informed decisions and contribute meaningfully to the development of this feature.

Competitor Analysis

I conducted an In-depth competitive analysis by studying their product, identifying key features, advantages and disadvantages.

User Research

I explored possible User Scenarios to understand who is the target audience and behaviours of the intended users

Based on insights from

User Research, scoping

the project

  • Due to limited time, I have only focused on the most common scenario of one person making the entire bill payment in the restaurant.

  • The bill split feature can also be used for online orders done on the app. But I have limited my focus and ideations to dine-out scenarios.

Retrospective

LEARNINGS & NEXT STEPS

If given more time and resources, I would prioritize user research and the testing phase to deeply understand user needs, gather valuable feedback, and discuss solutions with a group of designers. Collaborating with a team would foster unique solutions and incorporate diverse perspectives, ultimately leading to a more successful product. Additionally, I would delve into improving the setup flow, focusing on how payments are processed and updated within the app. Enhancing these areas would ensure a smoother user experience and address potential pain points related to payment management.

I am grateful for your time here. Let's continue to innovate, inspire and craft more meaningful experiences.
